Sleeping Spinners is a new series of paintings by Danish artist Anna Skov Hassing, created specifically for this exhibition. The works draw on a familiar motif from art history: the sleeping woman. The figures are taken from historical paintings from the 17th century and onwards, then fragmented into faces, hands, and bodies, and placed in new compositions. These resting figures are combined with elements of technological development and industrial production from the same periods. Several works reference early textile production and inventions such as the Spinning Jenny, pointing to a time when women’s labour played a central role in industrial work.

A contrast emerges between rest and activity. While the figures sleep, they remain surrounded by—and at times entangled in—systems of movement and production. Across the works, strands and flowing forms recur, connecting early textile processes with contemporary stone wool production, where molten stone is spun into fibres. The paintings are presented on deep frames, with formats that echo stone wool batts.
